Job Title: Assistant Director Student Support Services and Coordinator First Year Seminar

FLSA Status: Non- Exempt

Title of Manager/Supervisor: Associate Vice President Academic Support and Student Engagement and Director Student Support Services

Range: $24.50- $28.65 based on experience

Position Summary:

First Year Seminar
Act as the Coordinator of the First Year Seminar; Develop and teach a curriculum that addresses the first-year transition; collaborate with campus constituents to update and ensure relevancy over time. Responsible for recruiting, hiring, training and managing student staff.
TRiO: Student Support Services (SSS)
Works in collaboration with the Director to provide support services to qualifying students. Develop and execute program initiatives, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and university regulations, guidelines and policies. Responsible for providing intentional outreach and programing to increase retention and graduation rates within the TRiO: SSS program.

General Purpose: Introduce first-year students to the Clarkson community, provide a support network to aid with the transition to independent living and learning. Provide appropriate academic, financial, career and personal support services to increase retention and graduation rates for first generation, disabled, and income eligible students through the federal TRiO: Student Support Services program.

Position Responsibilities:

First Year Seminar (FYS):

  • Develop 11 week FYS curriculum, collaborate with university faculty and staff as necessary
  • Teach academic success components of the FYS curriculum and provide support to visiting instructors
  • Administer FYS curriculum to all first-year students in 12 classroom sections
  • Create summative and formative assessments
  • Oversee student academic progress and grading
  • Formulate, update, and maintain all course materials using Google Drive
  • Use university statistics and class assessments to improve curriculum
  • Work closely with Residential Life to infuse Living Learning Community themes into FYS
  • Partner with the Office of Information Technology to organize and track student performance using advanced capabilities of its learning management system
  • Normalize use of university resources with first-year students
  • Recruit, hire and train FYS student staff (60)
  • Create leadership and professional development opportunities for staff ? Develop and design staff training materials in collaboration with CRC Department of Education
  • Provide a minimum of two staff training sessions each year
  • Update and maintain Peer Educator Manual/Resource Guide
  • Coordinate and oversee CU Connect mentor program, intentionally matching every first-year student with a Clarkson faculty/staff mentor
  • Conduct a minimum of two training session for CU Connect mentors

TRiO: Student Support Services:

  • Serve on the SafetyNet Committee to support students in academic/personal crisis ? Assist with the identification, selection and monitoring of eligible program students ? Aid with the completion and submission of the Annual Performance Report for TRiO programs
  • Provide individual counseling and group workshops to develop a variety of academic, professional, and personal skills
  • Provide advocacy and act as liaison between faculty and students to develop personalized academic plans
  • Coordinate collaborative programming between TRiO programs
  • Assist with administering Supplemental Grant Aid and budget management as necessary
  • Educate students on various academic strategies relating to time management, note taking, exam preparation, textbook reading etc...
  • Develop research-based, alternative academic plans to foster retention ? Engage and guide students in major, graduate school, and career exploration; providing referrals as necessary
  • Promote financial literacy through programming and referrals
  • Support the Director in researching and writing the grant proposal for submission to US Dept. of Education

Essential Skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Education:
Minimal Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree preferably in Engineering, Math, Science, Psychology or related field

Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in education, curriculum and instruction, or related field preferred. Strong interpersonal skills and experience in areas of learning disabilities, and trends in minority education and college teaching desirable.

Experience:

Minimal Qualifications: Two (2) years academic counseling or other equivalent experience required

Preferred Qualifications: Five (5) year academic counseling or other equivalent experience preferred
