Role & Essential Functions

Does an internship spent exploring robots and other automation technology sound fun? Do you like the idea of identifying, developing, and testing new robotic applications? Do you view yourself as a “maker”? If you answered yes to these three questions, then we’d like to talk with you about an automation internship at Buffalo Manufacturing Works.

 

Buffalo Manufacturing Works, operated by EWI, is a one-of-kind center for advanced manufacturing. We are focused on developing, maturing, and implementing new technologies that have an impact on the clients we work with and the communities in which they live. Our customers are based across the country and include world-class leaders in the aerospace, automotive, consumer products, electronics, medical, energy & chemical, government, and heavy manufacturing industries. Located in Buffalo, New York, we are dedicated to building a nationally recognized hub of manufacturing innovation and are looking for smart, entrepreneurial, and driven people to help us achieve this goal.

 

We are currently looking to add an intern to our automation team. You’ll get exposure to a wide range of automation projects and activities with the team. For example:

  • Helping to identify and research potential automation technologies that could be used to support new applications
  • Working hands-on with collaborative robots (cobots) and a variety of supporting technologies to perform proof-of-concept testing
  • Participating in client discussions
  • Supporting internal automation development projects
  • Learning a ton about automation

 

This role requires someone who:

  • Has a strong “maker” mindset. Creativity and a strong drive to “figure it out” is critical
  • Is hardworking, ambitious, and enthusiastic about automation technologies
  • Works efficiently and safely in both independent and team situations
  • Has good time management skills, and always follow-through on commitments

During the summer semester, interns work 40 hours a week with potential for some overtime hours. 

Minimum Requirements

 

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:

  • Desire to work in hands-on lab environment and research environment
  • Education and experience in arc welding and/or robotic programming
  • Basic working knowledge of industrial robot/cobot technologies through coursework, previous jobs, or other activities
  • Basic working knowledge of a few supporting technologies such as vision systems, sensors, grippers, controls, industrial protocols, pneumatics, etc. 
  • 3D modeling experience (preferably Solidworks)
  • Experience programming cobots
  • Experience integrating a cobot/robot with supporting technologies or other equipment
  • Experience with 3D printing
  • CNC programming and operation experience
  • Python programming experience
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to effectively present to a group
  • Proven adaptability and flexibility as a part of a team
  • Solutions-oriented mindset
  • Seeking to learn from leading minds in innovation 
  • Proficient in MS Office
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Laboratory/light production floor with ventilation, climate-control system, moderate lighting, and moderate noise level;
  • Use finger dexterity to type, adjust, move, handle, perform, operate, install, attach, remove, apply, grasp, manipulate, and measure;
  • Frequently move, transport, rotate, reach, pull, twist, adjust position, push, stoop, bend, and crouch; and
  • Lift 10 to 40 pounds on a frequent basis and 40 to 80 pounds occasionally

 

ENGINEERING CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in engineering at an accredited university
