Our Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Senior Managing Engineer/Principal Engineer for our Vehicle Engineering Practice in Phoenix, AZ. In this role you will work as part of a team executing consulting projects that involve the analysis of vehicle, engine, and component performance (e.g., emissions; fuel economy; noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH); drivability; acceleration; etc.), federal emissions and fuel economy testing, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), automated vehicles, mechanical failures, safety assessments, federal and state regulations, and the design of consumer and industrial products. You will have the opportunity to ultimately develop your own consulting practice and grow professionally within Exponent.

You will be responsible for
  • Managing projects from initiation to completion; communicating project updates to other team members, clients, and administrative staff; ensuring that Exponent meets its deadlines and produces exceptional work product; and identifying business development opportunities
  • Developing and managing client relationships
  • Project and cost management on casework
  • Setting up and executing various test programs, including full-scale vehicle tests and component or control systems evaluations
  • Continue to develop specialized expertise in the automotive field such as the design, performance, and testing of existing or emerging automotive technology
  • Managing, mentoring, and providing consulting work for junior consulting staff
  • Developing and growing the Vehicle Engineering Practice in Phoenix
You will have the following skills and qualifications
  • Master's Degree or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • 8+ years of work experience in vehicle and automotive system design, development, testing, and deployment
  • Ability to generate business and manage client relationships
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to interact with managers, engineers, non-technical personnel, and clients and present technical topics in a cogent and comprehensible manner
  • Strong leadership and communication skills and experience mentoring junior staff
  • Field and/or lab measurement experience with good hands-on skills
  • Versatile, team-oriented, willing to work overtime and travel when required

The ideal candidate for this position combines hands-on experience in user research in an industrial or corporate setting and a strong basic scientific background in the foundations of cognition, perception, and human decision-making. Candidates should furthermore be comfortable working in a professional engineering and scientific consulting environment, which demands a high degree of self-motivation, dedication, and resilience to work-related stress.
