About the role

The Brooklyn Museum seeks a passionate Senior Manager of Community Engagement who will play a critical role in forging connections with our local communities, engaging local government officials, and developing partnerships with local and national social justice organizations. They will implement interactive programming in local communities while incentivizing those who have never engaged with the Museum to visit us. They will develop evaluative strategies to track our progress, and to assess how we might retain new audiences and create a more inclusive Museum.

The Senior Manager of Community Engagement will launch an innovative new Museum on Wheels initiative. This pioneering outreach and engagement program is designed to reach audiences in neighborhoods across Brooklyn, prioritizing those who have been historically underrepresented in the Museum's visitorship.

This position reports to the Director of Community Engagement and Partnerships, who-together with the Deputy Director for Learning and Social Impact-oversees the implementation of the Museum's social action framework. As part of this framework, the Museum is committed to meaningfully engaging audiences around issues of climate justice, mass criminalization, and economic development through exhibitions, public and educational programming, and strategic partnerships.

The successful Senior Manager of Community Engagement is a strategic thinker, dynamic community liaison, collaborative organizer, and advocate for the Museum and its work. They have demonstrated good judgment and grace in the face of difficult situations. They are considerate and respectful of diverse perspectives and experiences. Attention to the highest levels of discretion, honesty, and professionalism are essential.

Responsibilities

Outreach and engagement
  • Build anchor partnerships supporting our Museum on Wheels initiative and our commitments to mass criminalization and climate justice as outlined in our social action framework
  • Partner with the Engagement team to promote Museum on Wheels festivals and initiatives led by anchor partners through various marketing channels, including social media, email newsletters, and community publications
  • Represent the Museum and its efforts at community events
  • Regularly liaise with Brooklyn council members, NYCHA authorities, the Office of the Brooklyn Borough President, community boards, and other local government officials to garner their support
Program coordination and oversight
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee the Museum on Wheels schedule, ensuring efficient deployment to various locations in Brooklyn
  • Collaborate with the Education department to develop educational programs and activities that align with the Museum's mission and audience needs
  • Work closely with local organizations, schools, and community partners to identify target communities and schedule visits accordingly
  • Maintain updated records of program activities, attendance, and evaluative strategies
  • Ensure all necessary materials, equipment, and supplies are prepared and ready for each program
Program facilitation
  • Hire, train, and oversee part-time staff to lead and facilitate Museum on Wheels programs, ensuring a high level of engagement and participation from target audiences
  • Manage budget and track expenses related to professional services, programmatic materials, equipment, and honoraria for local talent
  • Provide guidance and support to local vendors, volunteers, and guest speakers involved in Museum on Wheels programs
  • Maintain a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, fostering dialogue, curiosity, and appreciation for art and culture
Evaluation and reporting
  • Track zip codes of participants in our community initiatives and compare to those represented in our general visitorship
  • Track engagement in our mass criminalization and climate justice initiatives, including related Education, Public Programs, and Community Engagement department efforts
  • Track profits and visitorship attained by partner vendors and businesses through Museum-related activities
  • Prepare comprehensive reports for the Learning and Social Impact department, highlighting program outcomes, attendance, and community response
  • Collect feedback, testimonials, and/or formal surveys from program participants and partners to measure the impact of the Museum on Wheels initiative as aligned with the social action framework
Qualifications
  • 3-5 years' experience in arts education, community organizing, economic development, or a related field
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse communities and build partnerships
  • Passion for arts education and community engagement, and a genuine interest in promoting social justice through the arts
  • Experience in program coordination and event planning, ideally within an educational or cultural institution or parks department
  • Knowledge of Brooklyn's diverse communities and cultural landscape
  • Proficiency in collecting and tracking data, and developing PowerPoint presentations
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required by program schedules and community events

Salary: $79,560

FLSA status: Exempt

Schedule: 35 hours per week, Tuesday-Saturday, 10 am-6 pm. This position is subject to evening and weekend hours.
