Job Description

Moffatt & Nichol is actively searching for an Assistant Inspector / Field Technician to join our Baton Rouge, LA office. As the successful new hire, you support a team who provides engineering condition assessments for transportation structures (bridges, highway overhead signs, and rail) across the State of Louisiana. The principal function of this position is to evaluate overhead sign structures through engineering inspections. You will utilize Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Nondestructive Testing criteria while inspecting overhead sign structures using access equipment and tools including but not limited to aerial lifts (mobile elevated work platforms), boats, ladders, safety harness, hand tools, and other equipment.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Conducts inspections and assists assessment of infrastructure assets
  • Works collaboratively with engineers and other professionals across the discipline
  • Utilizes field computers and tablets to record field observations
  • Prepares or assists in preparation of reports including data entry, text writing and photo editing
  • Data entry/manipulation and technical writing skills for the preparation and review of inspection reports.
  • Performs other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. Associate's Degree in Engineering or Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with Engineer in Training certificate is desired
  • Entry level with the eagerness to learn up to 5 years of experience
  • Field requirements are 5 days per week and hours may vary due to weather or daylight. Some weekends will be required. Willingness to work from Moffatt & Nichol's Baton Rouge, LA offices on non-field days
  • Availability and willingness to travel overnight is required
  • Valid driver's license in good standing with the ability to obtain a Class D driver's license
  • Boater Safety Card preferred
  • NHI certifications or NBIS qualifications a plus. Previous overhead sign structure inspection experience is encouraged but not required
  • Experience with Microsoft Office tools and general navigation of Windows. Python, JavaScript, C++, coding experience is a plus. iOS and Android mobile application development is a plus
  • Ability to work at height (climbing, cat walks and aerial lift vehicles) will be required. Fall protection certificates and experience are a plus
  • Work zone safety certificates are a plus
  • Nondestructive testing and/or certified weld inspection certificates are a plus
  • Possession of or eligibility to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Working conditions:

Field work will be performed outdoors across the State of Louisiana in all seasons. This work may require overtime during field weeks and will be followed by in-office report corrections/submittals of the inspection reports. Travel to other states and countries may be required as necessary.

Physical requirements:

Majority of work is field based which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment. Inspection equipment such as ladders and boats are sometimes necessary and the ability to lift and use this equipment with assistance can be expected. Climbing vertical and horizontal structures with the use of safety harnesses for fall protection will be required. Enduring inclement weather will also be required. Working around traffic will be required.
