Perform basic laboratory functions including specimen processing, customer service, and data entry procedures in support of the hospital's mission of patient care. Collect, process, store and transport blood, body fluids and tissue specimens. Perform clerical functions such as faxing, copying and mailing of reports and answering the phones professionally.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

For West Virginia Labs:

1. High School Diploma or Equivalent.

2. West Virginia Point of Care Technician (PoC) License within 90 days of hire, as applicable per physical work location assignment.

For Ohio and Maryland Labs:

1. High School Diploma or Equivalent.

PREFERREDQUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Phlebotomy Certification (CPT).

EXPERIENCE:

1. Six (6) months of Phlebotomy, Lab Assistant or Cytopreparatory experience.

1. Prepare specimens in order to perform basic diagnostic procedures designed to contribute to accurate reproducible patient results.

2. Operate laboratory equipment/instrumentation for basic testing and specimen processing consistent with standard operating procedures.

3. Prepare reagents and solutions required to complete specimen processing and testing according to the standard operating procedures.

4. Perform quality control procedures under direct supervision to ascertain the reliability of reagents and laboratory equipment/instrumentation.

5. Perform routine maintenance and quality control of laboratory equipment/instrumentation.

6. Report test results with limited errors and in a timely manner.

7. Utilize time, materials, and resources in an economical manner, prioritizing laboratory requests and workload to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency.

8. Complete assigned workload within established turnaround times by adjusting organization of work according to test ordering status.

9. Communicate any unusual supply usage or critical supply levels to the Supervisor/Manager.

10. Communicate any unusual medical/technical problems or unusual patient results.

11. Perform clerical duties as needed to support laboratory operations.

1. Heavy/Hard work: Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment weighing 40+lbs.

3. Abel to use Fax machines, printers and other office equipment.

Additional Job Description:

The successful candidate would be working primarily in a laboratory type setting performing a variety of basic support functions to assist in the daily operations of the Histology laboratory. The successful applicant would be responsible for assisting in: restocking of Histology supplies, setting up the processing and embedding areas for the subsequent day, assisting with patient slide organization and distribution to Pathologists, routine instrument maintenance, filing blocks and slides, scanning slides for Digital Pathology, Quality Control & Quality Assurance, and also routine handling of biohazardous and/or chemical hazardous material while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment. In addition, the successful application would be responsible with retrieving the batch of tissue cassettes from the "Gross Room" and load them on the tissue processors.In addition, they mustfollow and adhere to standard operating procedures and policies within the department. Visual acuity to distinguish small numbers and print on slides/cassettes, etc. is mandatory. Other ancillary duties not listed here may be included. A background in medical terminology and/or a background in biology, anatomy, and/or chemistry is preferred.
