Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Chair, Department of Neuroscience

The Albert Einstein College of Medicine ("") seeks a Chair of the Department of Neuroscience. The Chair of the Neuroscience Department will be an exceptional scientist and leader who will establish a clear vision that amplifies the wide range of research, collaborative efforts within the department and with other departments at Einstein, and shapes the academic direction of the department. The Chair will join an extraordinary faculty at a moment of growth and heightened potential for the department and brain science initiatives at Einstein.

The Dominick P. Purpura Department of Neuroscience at Einstein, founded in 1974, is one of the oldest neuroscience departments in the country. It was created to provide a formal academic program for enhancing collaborative research and training in neuroscience. Dr. Purpura, a world-renowned neuroscientist and member of the National Academy of Sciences, was the founding Chair and also served as Director of the Rose F. Kennedy Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center (RFK IDDRC), a relationship that facilitated the growth and development of both entities and fostered collaboration with neuroscientists in other departments.

Today, the Department of Neuroscience hosts a vibrant and diverse community of researchers, who together span a wide range of subdisciplines studying the structure and function of the nervous system in health and disease. The department has fostered and sustained a climate of strong and effective multidisciplinary collaborations among electrophysiologists, cellular and molecular neurobiologists, neurochemists, neurogeneticists, and systems, cognitive and computational neuroscientists.

The department has strengths in numerous research areas, and the research programs of the faculty are supported by robust NIH and private foundation grant support. In 2023, the department ranked 14th in the nation for federal grant support, with over $16 million dollars awarded to departmental investigators.

Since its inception, the department has been committed to translational neuroscience and deeply intertwined with the NIH funded RFK IDDRC. The mission of the IDDRC is to improve the lives of children with intellectual disability by fostering basic, translational and clinical research focused on better understanding and treating these conditions. Many faculty in the department have research programs focused on IDD-related issues and the department and IDDRC jointly support several shared research facilities, described below. The department also has rich collaborations and interactions with the other brain sciences departments at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine: the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, the Leo M. Davidoff Department of Neurological Surgery, and the Saul Korey Department of Neurology. A notable example is PRIME, the Psychiatry Research Institute of Montefiore Einstein, in the Department of Psychiatry.

Reporting to the Dean of the College, Yaron Tomer, the Chair will be a successful scholar and leader who will further cultivate a collegial, diverse and collaborative environment that values academic excellence, basic research, and the abundant clinical and translational research opportunities that exist at Montefiore Medical Center patient care sites. The Chair will be passionate, inspiring, and forward-thinking about neuroscience education and research, seizing opportunities to build and grow the department. They will establish a clear vision and strategy for the department that amplifies the excellent work being undertaken.

The Chair will enable impactful research and innovation by stewarding the department's scientific activities. The Chair will be responsible for maintaining the wide range of scientific activity within the department, while also building areas of strength with targeted recruitment. The successful candidate will invest in the development, training, education, and mentorship of faculty, staff, and trainees within the Neuroscience Department. They will promote an inclusive culture that is focused on the education and research mission of Einstein.

The Chair is responsible for the academic and administrative leadership of the department and will provide visionary leadership and set the strategic direction in alignment with the strategic goals of Einstein. Additionally, the Chair oversees department operations through thoughtful personnel decisions, general administration and management, budgeting and resource management, program support, and fundraising. The Chair will manage and support 25 faculty members, 55 graduate students, 20 post-doctoral fellows, and over 100 staff and staff scientists.

The ideal candidate will be an inspiring, creative leader with a distinguished research and academic track record, including a Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D. degree or equivalent. The Department Chair will have a record of significant scholarly accomplishment commensurate with appointment to the faculty at the rank of full or associate professor.

The successful candidate will have an international reputation as an independent investigator with a strong NIH funded program who can lead the department by example. The successful candidate will be a collaborative and creative leader, who is collegial, supportive, and empathetic. The Chair will possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) and strong emotional intelligence, with a keen focus on transparency and team building. The Chair should demonstrate the qualifications and personal characteristics that are well-matched with the values, strengths, and aspirations of Einstein and the Department of Neuroscience. The search committee seeks strong candidates with the following experience, abilities, and professional and personal attributes:

Location: The Albert Einstein College of Medicine is based in the northeast Bronx in New York City. Relocation to the Greater New York City area is required for this leadership role.

Compensation Range: The base salary range for this position is $375,000 - $425,000. In addition, the chair will be eligible for retirement, and additional benefits.
