MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL

Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Midwifery Division is seeking an experienced Certified Nurse Midwife to join our team. Our practice has been here since the inception of the OB Department which started in 1994. We strive to provide compassionate and comprehensive care to our clients that is culturally congruent and respectful to their individuality. MGH midwives provide antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, family planning and abortion care to the clients we serve.

We have a total of 22 Midwives within our practice that speak a variety of languages such as Spanish, Haitian Creole, French, Portuguese, Russian and Czech. We provide full- scope midwifery care to clients at MGH Centers for Outpatient care including Yawkey, Danvers, Waltham, as well as MGH Affiliated Health Centers including Charlestown, Chelsea and Revere. We also provide 24/7 coverage on labor and delivery and in our OB Emergency Room unit; manage the postpartum service; and we run a thriving Outpatient Triage Clinic

The MGH OB/GYN Department is a level 4 maternity care center. The Obstetrics Program delivers 3,700 babies a year and the midwifery service attends about 700 of those births. We are a collaborative practice and work alongside Maternal Fetal Medicine Physicians, OB/GYN Specialists, Genetic Counselors, Ultrasound Technicians and Nurses. As MGH is an academic teaching hospital, we value educating and teaching Midwifery students, OB/GYN & Emergency Medicine residents and Medical Students. Our midwives can become faculty appointed in Harvard Medical School.

This position is a 40-hour role with clinical administrative time. We desire an experienced midwife who can work both in our inpatient and outpatient settings. We are looking for a midwife who desires to work in a collaborative model, that is highly passionate in promoting and providing evidence based midwifery care and teaching our future generations of Midwifery and OB providers. GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

PATIENT CARE MANAGEMENT:

1.0 Provide and maintain midwifery care, which is effective and responsible to the needs of women from adolescence (13-17 years) through senior adult (55-64) years.

1.1 Provide care to all low to moderate risk patients desirous of midwifery care and to be responsible to the needs of the community.

1.2 Contribute to the development of guidelines for the midwifery service.

1.3 Implement the policies and procedures regarding delivery of patient care.

1.4 Collaborate with nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals to assess and meet the health care needs of the patients.

1.5 Meet with the Chief Nurse Midwife to identify, address, and resolve patient care issues.

1.6 Participate on committees to formulate clinical improvement initiatives and participates in the QA program.

1.7 Initiate and work on research issues which are applicable to clinical practice.

1.8 Have admission and discharge responsibilities for the assigned caseload of patients.

1.9 Provide care and management of low to moderate risk labor patients, including delivery; requiring twenty-four hour midwifery coverage.

1.10 Provide care and management of post partum patients, including post operative patients.

1.11 Consult with a physician as needed and co-manage certain patients with the physician as defined by the midwifery guidelines.

1.12 Provide care and triage of all obstetrical patients both urgent and non-urgent. Consult with the attending MD on duty, as needed.

1.13 Provide telephone triage services to obstetrical patients during non-office hours.

1.14 Engage in patient education at every visit.

1.15 Provide benign GYN care to assigned patient caseload.

1.16 Engages in the department's clinical teaching of nurse midwifery, medical students and physician residents. All hires after 2017 must apply and maintain Harvard Medical School Faculty status as a Teaching Associate under the guidance of the Director of Education for the Nurse Midwifery Service.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

2.0 Demonstrate and maintain clinical competence.

2.1 Identify learning needs and goals and design a plan to meet them.

2.2 Maintain necessary clinical skills through self-directed clinical practice.

2.3 Be available as a resource where expertise may be required.

2.4 Maintain current licensure and certifications required to practice.

PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITES:

3.0 Promote the concept and practice of midwifery as a component of perinatal medicine through active involvement in research projects. Participate in academic activities including basic continuing medical, midwifery, nursing, and public health education.

3.1 Recognize and meet the needs of under-served women through active involvement in community programs which promote health care for women and their families.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Graduation from an educational program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery and Education (ACME).

2. Successful completion of the certifying examination by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB).

3. Enrollment in the Certification Maintenance Program by the AMCB.

4. Licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)

5. Two years' experience as a Nurse Midwife preferred.

6. Skills in interpersonal communication, teamwork and organization required.

7. Master's Required.

8. Language skills preferred: Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean/Portuguese Creole
